THEME: Urban Symphony

PAVILION: The two-story Pavilion is meant to resemble a music box. The Pavilion’s theme is inspired by the harmony of unique elements in Singapore: progress and sustainability, urbanization and greenery, tradition and modernity and a cosmopolitan mix of residents of different races living peacefully together. The Pavilion also highlights its environmentally-friendly design. Façade slits and chilled water along the perimeter of the ground floor center space will help reduce massive energy consumption whilst recyclable building materials will feature extensively. Fountains at the square outside the Pavilion are a prelude to the Urban Symphony. When night falls, dazzling light rays flow out from the interlaced windows and façade slits, rendering the “music box” with more charming beauties.

EXHIBIT: The two environmental aspects that Singapore has successfully tackled in balancing progress with sustainability – water and garden – form the softscape of the Pavilion as its two design elements. The Pavilion incorporates an orchestra of elements into its design – music fountains, an interplay of sounds and visions, and roof garden flora, with the country’s unique rhythm and melody. Supported by four columns of different profiles, the entire structural system features floors of different shapes and sizes, connected by ramps and stairs suspended by trusses smoothly, to form a tensional balance, which symbolizes a harmonious coexistence of people who live, work and have fun in Singapore. Visitors enter through the Foyer, a gathering place where fountains will help cool the atmosphere. Video kiosks at the entrance will show videoclips of nine residents of Singapore who have emigrated from other places in the world as well as native Singaporeans who speak candidly on the Singaporean way of life. Visitors will then enter the next section of the Pavilion, Urban Biorhythms. Here, interactive media, large-screen projections and pictures will show visitors the gardens and green urban existence that is Singapore. The Metro-Nome is an interactive game experience; as visitors jump on bounce pads in unison, the wall display changes, showing the growth of Singapore from the past until now. Urban Symphony is the main theater experience, a music video featuring four of Singapore’s hottest musical stars; Stephanie Sun, JJ Lin, A-Do and Tanya Chua. The four and a half minute video, presented in the round, is an “American Idol”-style pop music sung in Mandarin and features many sights and sounds of modern Singapore. Visitors will exit the theater into Floral Finale, a rooftop garden that will dazzle the visitor with sight, scent and sound in a lush, natural environment with many beautiful plants commonly found in Singapore. Here visitors can take a break from the rush and bustle of the Expo.

CUISINE: The Pavilion has a food court divided into four sections, named after four ethnic groups – Little India, Chinatown, Malay Village and Nyonya Street. You can taste all sorts of exciting culture-specific dishes in the different sections, such as Little India’s Fish Head Curry, Chinatown’s Chili Crab, Malay Village’s Nasi Lemak (steamed coconut rice) and Nyonya Street’s Assam Prawn.
